Record Success: 27th Annual Comida Food Drive
14-Dec-2012
HPD would like to thank the Houston community. Thanks to everyone’s generosity, the 27th annual “Comida” (food in Spanish) Drive was a record success. The food and monetary donations collected at Fiesta Marts throughout Houston and via the Houston Police Foundation exceeded $55,000.
The Comida Drive began 27 years ago, in December 1985, with an officer's concern for the less fortunate citizens of Houston. That began what is now one of the largest food drives in the city of Houston. During its first year, approximately 600 families received a box of non-perishable food. This year HPD will be able to feed more than 3500 Houston families. The distribution of the food will be given to churches that pre-registered to participate in the program. Each donated box feeds a family of four a holiday meal that is struggling to make ends meet.
Thanks to everyone who has given their time and money to make the holidays a little better for those in need. Special thanks to our sponsors of this annual food drive: Fiesta Mart, the Pepsi Bottling Group, the Houston Citizens' Police Academy Alumni Association, the Police and Clergy Alliance and the Houston Police Foundation. This year marks the 27th year of partnership with Pepsi and Fiesta.
