HOUSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT HONOR GUARD DETAIL

The Houston Police Department Honor Guard Detail was organized in 1972. It was the first such unit established in the State of Texas. In addition to its regular duties, the Honor Guard acts as the official ceremonial unit of the Houston Police Department at events throughout the State and Nation. It was formed primarily for the purpose of rendering honors during funeral services of Houston Police Officers slain while in the performance of their duty. Since its inception, the mission of the Honor Guard has been expanded. The Honor Guard participates in various ceremonial events, including cadet graduations, promotions, and conferences organized by the department. They also take part in parades and other public functions as requested by the Chief of Police and the Mayor of Houston.

Over the past five years, the Honor Guard has successfully completed more than 900 assignments. These varied assignments include flag team duties, funerals for retired Houston Police Officers, and, with profound sorrow, full police honors for our fallen brothers who died in the line of duty.

To maintain its current level of operation, the Honor Guard is seeking financial support from corporations, organizations, and individuals to help offset the unit's operating expenses for essential equipment, such as burial flags and uniforms.

·        The cost for outfitting one member in the ceremonial uniform is approximately $2,000.

·        American and Texas burial flags, which are folded and presented at every officer's funeral, cost $120 each.
